Rare and Fine One-Gallon Vertical-Handled Stoneware Jar with Incised Foliate Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, circa 1790, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, footed base, and ribbed vertical handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an incised foliate design highlighted in manganese slip. Manganese highlights to handle terminals. The use of a three-pronged tool to create the decorations' stems, the jar's vertical handled form, and its use of manganese-dioxide slip, are all characteristics of early-period Manhattan pieces by an as-yet-unidentified school or maker. The incised leaves on this jar are related to those found on an important incised bird jar with black slip highlights, possibly by the Crolius family, sold as lot 133 in our October 17, 2015 auction. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Heavy chipping to base. One handle broken into two pieces and reglued. H 10".
