Outstanding and Important One-Gallon Stoneware Cream Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration and Bold Freehand Inscription, "HARRiSBUrG", attributed to Cowden & Wilcox, Harrisburg, PA, circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and flattened rim, decorated with the large freehand inscription "HARRiSBUrG." above a spitting tulip. Few Harrisburg stoneware pieces are known with cobalt slip inscriptions. The color, even glazing, and size of the inscription on this jar enhances the significance of this work. The bold writing may commemorate Harrisburg as both the jar's city of origin as well as the state capitol of Pennsylvania. A tight, approximately 4" sealed line on underside, continuing up majority of reverse, where it forms a fork. Otherwise excellent condition. H 9".
