Small-Sized Stoneware Jar with Incised Bird Decoration, possibly Paul Cushman, Albany, NY, circa 1810, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and thin, flaring rim, decorated with an incised design of a ring-necked bird with long tail, perched on a stylized branch. Surface covered in a chocolate-brown Albany slip glaze. While the form and employment of an Albany slip exterior can be linked to pieces bearing the mark of Albany, NY pottery owner, Paul Cushman, its bird motif is not closely-related to any of the various avian designs we have seen on signed Cushman ware. However Cushman's bird motifs, most of which were likely executed by the Jonah and Calvin Boynton, can differ vastly in overall style and quality from piece to piece. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a fifty-year private collection. A 7/8" restored rim chip and two other minor restored rim chips. Other very minor rim and base nicks, which are not restored. A small iron ping at base. H 7 1/2".
