Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt and Manganese Floral Decoration, Stamped "A.E. SPENCER", Asa E. Spencer, Portage County, OH, circa 1860, ovoid jug with thick spout, decorated with a highly unusual cobalt and manganese tulip motif applied over slip-coated clay. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Appealing use of two different-colored slips. Provenance: Deaccessioned from the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley, Winchester, VA. In-the-firing crawling of the base slip and decoration. One spout chip.
