Very Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Sugar Bowl, incised on underside "J. CHARD," attributed to the Remmey Pottery, Philadelphia, PA, circa 1860, squat, ovoid jar with foot, flaring rim, and tab handles, decorated front and back with a brushed cobalt flower decoration. Rim decorated with dashed brushwork. Tops of handles covered in cobalt, and decorated with a cobalt circle at each end and a line of cobalt underneath. The name "J. CHARD" incised in large letters on underside and highlighted in cobalt, probably the jar's owner or its potter. An excellent example of this rare form, made at one of America's most celebrated potteries. Provenance: Dr. Raymond L. Owen Collection. Chips and expected wear on interior of rim. Height 3 7/8" ; Diameter at opening 4 1/4".
