Extremely Rare One-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug, Stamped "ALBANY WARE", William Capron, Albany, NY, circa 1800-1805, ovoid jug with tooled spout, featuring the large impressed maker's mark, "ALBANY WARE", within an oval border. Brushed cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. William Capron's "ALBANY WARE" maker's mark is the regarded as the rarest and earliest Albany, NY maker's mark. This example, among other signed "Albany Ware" pieces, features a pleasing, light clay ground uncommon to pieces produced by other Albany potters over the next twenty years. Only the second "ALBANY WARE" piece we have ever offered. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Restoration to top molding of spout on its left side. Heavy chipping to base. An in-the-firing iron ping to front. A shallow flake to side of handle, believed to be in-the-firing. Some circumferential surface wear to midsection. H 12 1/2".
