Stoneware Batter Pail with Bird Decoration, attributed to the Whites Pottery, Utica, NY, circa 1865, ovoid form with tubular pouring spout and wood-and-wire bail handle, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a fan-tailed bird "running" atop a stylized branch. Impressed "4" on reverse for four quarts. Literature: Illustrated in Stoneware, Prized Ware of Old Time Potters, in The Encyclopedia of Collectibles, Time Life Books, Alexandria, VA, 1980, p. 138. Top-to-bottom X-shaped crack on side of pail. A 1" rim chip. A minor nick to handle. A glazed-over iron ping to front.
