Large-Sized Redware Vase with Applied Floral Decoration, probably Mid-Atlantic origin, second half 19th century, ovoid-bellied vase with tall, flaring collar, profusely-decorated with hand-modeled and applied roses blossoming from a leafy stem. Cold-painted decoration throughout. The quality of the applied rose decoration suggests Mary Elizabeth Bell, daughter of John Bell, as one possible maker. A rose-decorated vase attributed to this lesser-known member of the Bell family of potters is illustrated on page 39 of Rice and Stoudt's The Shenandoah Pottery. Exceptional size. Typical losses to decoration. Wear to paint. Wear to rim. Shallow chipping to base. H 15 1/4".
