Six-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped Twice "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO'", Pennsylvania origin, circa 1850-1880, large-sized, ovoid jar with semi-rounded rim and ribbed lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with two large dotted tulips in the John Bell style. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed under both handles with John Bell maker's mark above an incised "6". Lid with profuse spotted tulip decoration surrounding a cobalt-highlighted knob, impressed "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO'". Exceptional size. Jar with a 3" x 1" in-the-firing chip to base, a 7/8" in-the-firing chip to one handle, and a hairline across underside, continuing as a very faint line approximately 3" up base of jar. Lid with heavy chipping. H (excluding lid) 13 3/4" ; Diameter (of lid) 13 1/2".
