Very Rare Six-Gallon Greensburg, PA Stoneware Advertising Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to Albert Black, Confluence, PA, circa 1872, semi-ovoid jar with flattened rim and ribbed lug handles, featuring the large stenciled advertising, "S. BLYTHE, / GROCERIES & C / GREENSBURG. PA.", executed with a sponge and applied over slip-coated clay. Advertising is flanked by freehand flourishes and underscored by a bold-faced, stenciled "6" with freehand stripe below. Reverse with finely-brushed floral motif in the Black family style. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Top of rim impressed twice with a six-gallon capacity mark. Advertising pieces produced by members of the Black family, active in Somerfield, Confluence, and Meyersdale, are considered highly unusual. This example features crisp stenciling and excellent color. A glazed-over chip to one handle with some additional, minor post-firing chipping. A top-to-bottom crack on left side of jar's front. Some tight cracks to right side of jar, extending onto right side of decoration on front. A 1 1/4" x 1" flake to interior of rim. A few other very minor chips to interior of rim. A few in-the-firing pings to surface. An in-the-firing contact mark to right of stenciling, which includes two small chips. Jar is somewhat out-of-round. H 14 1/2".
