Exceedingly Rare Stoneware Pedestal-Based Urn with Elaborate Cobalt Decoration, Western PA origin, circa 1875, ovoid urn with pedestal base, applied lug handles, and heavy crimping to rim and shoulder, the body and base decorated with alternating rows of freehand stripes and vining. Highly-unusual form exhibiting skillful potting. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a thirty-five year Midwestern collection. Significant restoration to rim. A 3 1/2" x 2" restored section to base. Some glazed-over chipping to shoulder molding. A Y-shaped hairline descending from crimping on reverse. Base with a faint 2 1/4" line and salt drip. H 14".
