Fine Small-Sized Stoneware Jar with Incised Compass Decoration, attributed to Thomas Commeraw, Manhattan, NY, early 19th century, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder and open loop handles, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted Federal drape design created with a compass. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. The decoration and form of this jar matches signed Thomas Commeraw examples, allowing for an easy attribution to this early, African-American potter. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. A thin crack across underside, extending 5 3/4" up one side of jar. A 3" hairline from rim, some in-the-firing flakes, and a contact mark to opposite side. Two restored rim chips. H 7 3/4".
