Rare and Fine Quart-Sized Stoneware Jar with Incised Foliate Decoration, Stamped "J. REMMEY / MANHATTAN-WELLS / NEW-YORK", circa 1805, small-sized, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder and open loop handles, decorated on the reverse with an incised and cobalt-highlighted foliate design in the Manhattan style. Front impressed with the large cobalt-highlighted maker's mark of John Remmey, III. Handle terminals on one side of jar decorated with large circular manganese brushwork. Handle terminals on opposite side decorated with a bluish-brown slip, probably composed of cobalt and manganese. Exceptional size. One of the finest Manhattan jars by the Remmey family we have ever offered. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. A 1 1/2" area of shallow in-the-firing chipping to base. A minor glazed-over base nick and small post-firing base chip. A minor nick to top of rim. Some minor wear to shoulder molding. H 7 1/8".
