Extremely Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Inkwell with Applied Leaf Decoration, Inscribed "John Fritz", Lancaster, PA origin, circa 1875, cylindrical form with footed base and circular opening in top, the body decorated with four molded and applied maple leaves surrounded by cobalt. Top and upper edge of inkwell decorated with rows of cobalt spots. Underside incised "John Fritz". Exceptional form, highly unusual decoration, and rare maker. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, acquired by the consignor years ago in Pennsylvania. Excellent condition with a shallow chip to top edge and a small, in-the-firing chip to bottom edge. H 2 5/8".
