Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "S.D. KELLOGG / WHATELY", MA origin, circa 1851-1853, cylindrical jug with semi-squared spout, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a bird with spotted body and striped wing, perched on a vine. Cobalt highights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Some fry to cobalt. Two small spout chips to exterior of spout and two minor chips to interior of spout. An iron ping at base on reverse. Some minor surface wear to right side of jug and base on left side of jug. Minor base nicks on reverse and a minor glazed-over surface chip at base on reverse. A small, faint Y-shaped line at shoulder on reverse.
