Fine Five-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar, Incised "Lm" with Five Punctuates and Two Slash Marks, attributed to Dave, Lewis Miles' Stoney Bluff Manufactory, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1855, highly-ovoid jar with thin, semi-rounded rim and raised lug handles, the surface covered in a mottled brown alkaline glaze and incised at the shoulder, "Lm", beside five punctates and two slash marks. This example features Dave's classic, robust jar form, retains a lustrous alkaline glaze, and survives in very nice overall condition. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor years ago. A 4" surface line on underside, continuing 8" vertically onto body of jar, not visible on interior. very shallow chip to top of rim, and some typical minor chipping to base. H 14".
