Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COOPER & POWER / MAYSVILLE . KY", attributed to the Boughner Family, Greensboro, PA, circa 1860, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and incised banding around midsection, decorated with a brushed design of a tulip blossom from a long, looping stem with leaves. Brushed cobalt stripes to rim and base. Impressed on the reverse with the merchant mark, "COOPER & POWER / MAYSVILLE . KY", used on pieces made for the Maysville, Kentucky firm of Newton Cooper and his son-in-law, Hugh Power. Interestingly, Cooper and Power ordered stoneware from at least two different potteries in Greensboro, those operated by Alexander and William Boughner and William Leet Hamilton. The distinctive tulip motif on this jar leads to a firm attributed to the Boughner family. Excellent size and decoration, coupled with a rare Southern merchant mark. Some light surface wear. Two in-the-firing contact marks to right of tulip blossom. Some typical wear to interior of rim and a smooth, glazed-over chip on interior of rim. H 10".
