Scarce Vertical-Handled Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Watch Spring Decoration, Manhattan, NY or Cheesequake, NJ, 18th century, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, and applied vertical handles, decorated with slip-trailed watch spring motifs on the front and reverse. Handle terminals decorated with brushed cobalt highlights, with additional watch spring motifs emanating from the lower terminal. Excellent form and appealing small size, measuring roughly three quarts. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Crazing to base, rim, and shoulder areas. A thin crack through one handle. A few small, shallow base chips. H 9 1/4".
