Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird Decoration with Original Paper Label, Stamped "SATTERLEE & MORY / FORT EDWARD, N.Y.", circa 1875, cylindrical jug with squared rim, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a bird perched on an abstract floral spray. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Reverse includes an original paper label for an extract of white Indian hemp, or swamp milkweed, which reads "FLUID EXT. / INDIAN HEMP, White / Asclepias incarnata". Period medical manuals indicate that white Indian hemp has been used to cure asthma and rheumatism. Staining to surface. Some damage to label. A second label for white Indian hemp was removed at shoulder, with only a small section remaining.
