Rare Six-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Pheasant-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "W-A LEWIS / GALESVILLE N-Y", circa 1858, semi-ovoid churn with rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a pheasant with crest and turned head, perched in the crook of a tree stump. Good detail to stump and ground below. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Figural-decorated pieces from the W.A. Lewis Pottery are considered rare. This example combines a skillfully-turned, large-sized churn form with a formidable pheasant motif measuring 10 1/2" tall. Significant sealed cracks on reverse, extending onto left and right sides of churn. Spider line extending from base to wing of bird. An iron ping to front. A salt drip to reverse. H 19".
