Exceptional Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Profuse Cobalt Grapes and Foliate Decoration, Stamped "M. & T. MILLER / NEWPORT, PA", circa 1870, cylindrical jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with an elaborate brushed design of a stem bearing a large central leaf flanked by foliate sprays and two clusters of grapes. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. This stunning jug typifies the exuberant and artistic brushwork for which the Miller brothers have become known. It is only the second piece of Miller stoneware we have seen featuring a grapes design, and the first we have seen decorated with this particular "leaf and double grapes" motif. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently discovered in Virginia. A thin spider crack descending from the spout to shoulder on each side of the jug. An additional group of tight surface lines to shoulder area. H 14 1/2".
