Rare Anna Pottery Stoneware Railroad Pig Flask, Dated 1894, Wallace Kirkpatrick, Anna, IL, 1894, molded flask in the form of a pig with well-detailed face, incised hooves, anatomically-correct underside, and hole at rear. Surface covered in Albany slip and incised on one side with the unusual inscription "To my Old Friend / With a little good old Rye / in a Pigs- / 1894". Remainder of profusely-incised with a map of the Midwestern U.S., including the following landmarks: St. Louis, Miss River, Springfield, Rock Island, Gd Tower, Chester, Belle Ville, C & A, O & M, lasalle, M & O, alto, Pinckville, Bloomington, Decatur, ICRR (twice), Sandovle, Junction, anna, Carbondale, Duquoin, Tamaroa, Centralia, Odin, Champgn, Kankakee, Pullman, Chicago, Tunnel Hill, Big 4, vincennes, Cairo, Mound City, and Cincinnati. This flask was made by Wallace Kirkpatrick (1828-1896) four years after the death of his brother, Cornwall (1814-1890), during the final years of the pottery's operation. Its unusual inscription, "To my Old Friend", may be a reference to Kirkpatrick's advanced years. The flask features one of the most elaborate incised railroad maps we have found on an Anna pig flask, which includes a few, lesser-seen landmarks such as "Rock Island" and "Big 4". Excellent condition with small chips to spout. L 6 3/4".
