Very Rare New York State Stoneware Advertising Jug, Western PA origin, circa 1875, ovoid jug with tooled spout, featuring the stenciled cobalt advertising "JOHN MATTHEWS. / SYRUP / DEPARTMENT / N.Y.". This jug is the first example of Western PA stoneware we have seen made for the New York State market. A 3/4" chip to side of spout. A small stone ping to front. Small in-the-firing contact marks to shoulder.
