Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Double-Bird Decoration, Northeastern U.S. origin, circa 1825, ovoid jug with tooled spout, decorated with an elaborate incised design of two birds feeding from a flowering vine with loosely-applied cobalt highlights throughout. Good incised detail to blossoms and birds' tails. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. The decoration has an interesting, naive quality about it, as the bird-and-floral motif continues around the right side of the jug to include a second larger bird, almost appearing as an afterthought. Restoration to reglued pieces on front, including some small chips visible along crack lines and an approximately 3" section of touch-up to surface along vine (visible as an area of lighter blue). A glazed-over base chip. Shallow chipping to spout, some of which is glazed over. H 13 3/4".
