Outstanding Earthenware Umbrella Stand with Profuse Applied and Incised Figural Decoration, Welsh origin, late 19th century, very large, cylindrical form with applied handle at base, the polychrome-glazed surface profusely-decorated with incised decorations of birds on flowering branches, trees, a pig, a windmill, butterflies, a smiling heart, and sun face motifs. Three applied frogs and a large entwined snake additionally ornament the surface. A folk art masterpiece from Wales, with applied decoration reminiscent of Illinois' Anna Pottery. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, found in a Baltimore, MD basement years ago. Loss to top of umbrella stand, including top of snake. Loss to head of frog at base. Old staple repairs to handle at base. H 35".
