Scarce and Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised and Impressed Decoration, Stamped "C. CROLIUS / MANUFACTURER MANHATTAN-WELLS / NEW-YORK", circa 1805, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and open loop handles, decorated below the maker's mark with an incised foliate motif in the Manhattan style. Reverse decorated with an unusually elaborate design of an impressed flower blossom with splayed leaves emanating from its base. Cobalt highlights to incised and impressed decoration, maker's mark, and handle terminals. While numerous signed pieces made at the shops of Clarkson Crolius, Sr., have survived to this day, this example features a particularly well-executed design on its reverse. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. A tight 4" Y-shaped surface line near base on reverse, not visible on interior. A 1" surface line from rim on reverse, which does not extend through to interior. A 1 1/2" surface line at base on front, not visible on interior. Some minor wear to rim. H 11 3/8".
