Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Impressed Drape-and-Tassel Decoration, Stamped "COMMERAWS STONEWARE", Thomas Commeraw, Manhattan, NY, early 19th century, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, footed base, and open loop handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an impressed and cobalt-highlighted drape-and-tassel motif. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Significant cracks on reverse, most or all of which occurred in-the-firing. Front of jar with a long curving crack extending upward from base. Light wear and a small chip to rim. Chipping to base and underside. H 11 1/2".
