Scarce Three-Gallon Cobalt-and-Iron-Decorated Stoneware Jug with Drape-and-Tassel Motif, Stamped "BOSTON / 1804", Frederick Carpenter, Boston, MA, 1804, highly-ovoid jug with heavily-tooled shoulder, semi-rounded spout, and ribbed handle, decorated with an impressed and cobalt-highlighted drape-and-tassel motif to shoulder. Impressed with the cobalt-highlighted stamps, "BOSTON." and "1804." below spout. Base with dipped reddish-brown, iron-oxide slip. This example features a wonderful form, an unusual impressed drape variant, and an appealing use of both cobalt and iron slips, not often found on Carpenter's work. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased decades ago by the consignor. Significant cracks to base area, at least one of which occurred in the firing. A chip to reverse side of spout. Two base chips. Some typical in-the-firing pings to surface. H 16".
