Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Flower Basket Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT", circa 1855, ovoid pitcher with tooled midsection and tall collar with large rim molding, the front decorated with a boldly-slip-trailed design of a floral spray emanating from a basket. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Pitchers produced at the J. & E. Norton factory are considered rare. The size of this pitcher and its desirable flower basket motif add to its rarity and visual appeal. Excellent color. Significant restoration to spout area, which is peeling off on the left side. Additional restored spots to rim molding on left side and reverse of pitcher. A 4 1/4" hairline from rim on left side of pitcher. A small in-the-firing contact mark / chip to body. H 13".
