Very Fine Quart-Sized Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Watchspring Decoration, probably Manhattan, NY, mid 18th century, squat-shaped, ovoid jar with footed base and heavily-tooled bands to shoulder and base, decorated with three watch spring motifs around the body and a cobalt stripe below the rim. Excellent size, form, and decoration. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased decades ago by the consignor. A 1 3/8" surface chip, possibly in-the-firing, along with other small surface chips and light exfoliation. A small chip and nick to exterior of rim. Exfoliation to interior of jar. Shallow chipping to interior of rim. Shallow nicks and wear to base. A 2 1/4" hairline ascending from base. H 6".
