Exceedingly Rare and Important One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Ship Decoration, attributed to Clarkson Crolius, Sr., Manhattan, NY, circa 1810-1820, ovoid jug with heavily-tooled spout, featuring an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a three-masted sailing ship sporting two American flags and a banner. Cobalt drape decoration to shoulder on each side. Cobalt highlight to upper handle terminal and along impression at lower handle terminal. The swag decoration, form, and color, are consistent with pieces produced at the shop of Clarkson Crolius, Sr. during the first quarter of the 19th century. More specifically, this jug is closely-related to a small drape-decorated jug, stamped "C. CROLIUS / MANUFACTURER / NEW-YORK", which was sold as lot #32 in our November 6, 2010 auction. The small signed jug shares similarities in color, spout construction, brushed swag decoration, and distinctive lower handle terminal decoration. The jug offered in our March auction is significant in that it is the only example of ship-decorated stoneware we are aware of carrying a strong Crolius family attribution. Professional restoration to much of spout. A faint 2 1/2" hairline on underside of jug, continuing 5" up right side of jug. Some in-the-firing contact marks to surface, typical of pieces of this age and origin. Some light surface wear around midsection. H 10 3/4".
