Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Iron-Oxide Decoration, attributed to John Swann, Alexandria, VA, circa 1810, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, applied tab handles, and flared rim, decorated with a dipped reddish-brown iron-oxide slip on the upper portion of the jar. This example features a particularly bulbous form and is somewhat larger than most Swann jars of this style we have seen. Two chips to one handle. Three chips to opposite handle, one of which is glazed over. A Y-shaped crack on underside, extending several inches up body of jar. A 1 1/8" base chip. H 14 1/2".
