Rare and Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Profuse Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO'", PA origin, circa 1850-1880, semi-ovoid jug with short, semi-rounded spout, heavily-decorated on the left and right sides with an unusual cobalt flowering vine motif, each bearing three tulip blossoms. Front of jug with classic John Bell spotted tulip motif. Foliate decoration to handle and cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Excellent decoration, more elaborate than most Bell examples of this form known. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, consigned from Illinois. Excellent overall condition with some faint lines in underside, probably in-the-firing, one of which continues a short distance onto right side of jug at base.
