Very Rare Seven-Gallon Stoneware Water Cooler, Inscribed "A. Sampson and Son / 1868", Abraham Sampson and Son, Irwin Township, Venango County, PA, 1868, ovoid cooler with semi-squared rim, open strap handles, and circular bung hole, incised on one side "A. Sampson and Son", and additionally on the opposite side with the date "1868" below an impressed seven-gallon capacity mark. Surface covered in a reddish-brown Albany slip glaze with noticeable salt glazing to the shoulder. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor in Western PA. Essentially as-made condition with a minor rim chip and a streak of residue to left side of cooler near base. H 19 1/2".
