Rare Small-Sized Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Swag Decoration, Stamped "G. & A. Black," Somerfield, Somerset County, PA origin, circa 1860, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and squared rim, decorated around the shoulder with five groups of inverted cobalt swags. Impressed with George and Albert Black maker's mark on shoulder. Measuring approximately one-half-gallon to three quarts, this jar is the smallest example of signed G. & A. Black stoneware we have ever offered. Several rim chips. A tight, 5" inverted Y-shaped crack from rim. A 2 3/4" Y-shaped hairline to underside. Three base chips, one of which is glazed over. H 8 1/4".
