Extremely Rare Small-Sized Stoneware Canning Jar with Stenciled Cobalt Thistle, Pinwheel, and Freehand Stripe Decoration, Western PA origin, circa 1875, tapered jar with tooled shoulder and rounded rim with wax sealer interior, the front decorated with a large stenciled design of a thistle below a band of stenciled pinwheels. Sides and reverse of jar cobalt-decorated with vertical freehand stripes. Exceptional decoration and desirable small size. This jar is the first bearing this particular combination of stenciled motifs that we have seen. Two small chips to underside at edge. A 1 3/4" hairline from rim. H 6 1/2".
