Very Rare Stoneware Ship Chandler's Jug with Impressed Floral Decoration, attributed to Jonathan Fenton, Boston, MA, late 18th century, one-and-a-half-quart jug with squat body, ribbed handle, and heavily-tooled spout with pronounced molding, the front decorated with an impressed and cobalt-highlighted design of a flower emanating from a leafy stem. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Jugs of this shape are often referred to as "ship chandler" or "buggy" jugs, because their form made them less likely to tip in transit. This example, the first of its kind by Fenton we have offered, may have seen use on a ship in Boston harbor. Exceptional form and size. A painted area on right side of jug near base indicates a restoration of some sort, possibly to a small exfoliated spot. A 3/4" glazed-over chip to side of spout. A minor nick and line to top edge of spout. A few small base chips. A 7/8" iron ping to reverse. H 7".
