Scarce Quart-Sized Stoneware Jug with Coggled Bird-and-Leaf Decoration, attributed to Branch Green, Philadelphia, PA or possibly Old Bridge, NJ origin, early 19th century, ovoid jug with heavily-tooled spout and applied handle, decorated with a coggled design of a bird holding a leaf in its beak, covered in a wide band of cobalt slip. This example is somewhat smaller than the vine-decorated Branch Green jug in this auction, and may actually measure closer to one pint. Desirable size. Sealed spider crack on reverse, extending onto left side of jug. This crack also extends onto underside, where it forms a tight spider line. A minor base chip. A minor spout chip, which may have occurred in the firing. H 6 3/4".
