Rare Small-Sized Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Canning Jar, Stenciled "S.H. Ward", Stephen H. Ward, West Brownsville, PA, circa 1870, squat-shaped jar with tapered body and tooled accents to the wax sealer rim and shoulder, the front featuring the finely-stenciled signature, "S.H. Ward". Signed examples of Stephen H. Ward stoneware are considered difficult-to-find. This example is potted in appealing canning jar form. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently discovered in Ohio. Three rim chips, two of which measure 7/8". A long, shallow in-the-firing contact mark to top of rim. H 6".
