Tanware Whiskey Jug, Stenciled "S.T. SUIT. / SUITLAND, MD.", New Geneva or Greensboro, PA origin, Dated 1879, cylindrical jug with flared spout and ribbed strap handle, Albany-slip-decorated with the stenciled inscription "S.T. SUIT. / SUITLAND, MD. / LITTLE BROWN JUG / The Whiskey in this Jug / Was Made 1869. / AND JUGGED BY ME / 1879". This example features particularly crisp stenciling. Literature: This exact jug is illustrated on p. 99 of American Stoneware by William C. Ketchum, Jr.. Excellent condition with minor rim wear, probably in-the-firing. H 6 7/8".
