Scarce Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Canning Jar with Stenciled Cherries Decoration, Stenciled "Hamilton & Jones.", Greensboro, PA origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder and rounded wax sealer rim, decorated with a stenciled cluster of three cherries hanging from a leafed stem. Stenciled with the maker's signature, "Hamilton & Jones", above. Freehand stripe below rim. Desirable stenciled design. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently discovered in Ohio. A large oval crack on left side of jar indicates that section of the jar is probably broken and reglued. A 5 3/4" vertical crack on front, continuing across underside. A small chip and a 1 1/4" area of wear to inner wax sealer rim. A 2 3/4" x 1 3/8" flake to underside/bottom edge of jar. H 8 1/8".
