Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar, Stenciled "JNO. CALDWELL & SONS. / ST CLAIR, PA", circa 1880, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with John Caldwell & Sons maker's stenciling and a freehand cobalt "3", applied over a slip-washed surface. Signed examples of St. Clair, PA stoneware are considered difficult-to-find. A 1 1/2" chip to body at base, which forms a tiny hole on interior. This chip is partially-filled with plaster. A 7 1/4" inverted Y-shaped crack from rim on reverse. Cracks around base, continuing onto underside. Two cracks extending up from base, visible on left and right sides of jar's front, measuring 6" and 5".
