Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Iron-Oxide Decoration, Stamped "BOSTON / 1804", Frederick Carpenter, Boston, MA, circa 1804, finely-potted, ovoid jar with footed base, open loop handles, and tooled banding to the shoulder and rim, the surface with dipped, reddish-brown iron-oxide decoration to upper and lower sections of the jar. Impressed at the shoulder with the desirable Frederick Carpenter maker's mark featuring the date "1804", below a two-gallon capacity mark at rim. An 8" crack and 5" crack from rim on reverse. A faint 2 1/4" hairline at base. One base chip, possibly glazed over. Minor nicks to underside at bottom edge. Surface flakes to underside. Several in-the-firing iron pings to surface. Two small, very shallow surface flakes to shoulder on side of jar. Several rim chips.
