Exceptional Two-Gallon Stoneware Advertising Jug with Stenciled Cobalt Eagle Decoration, Stenciled "EAGLE POTTERY" and "BAYLESS McCARTHY / & CO. / LOUISVILLE KY", James Hamilton & Co., Greensboro, PA, circa 1875, semi-ovoid jug with tooled spout, decorated with a stenciled design of a Federal eagle holding a banner inscribed "Eagle Pottery.". Stenciled below with the advertising "BAYLESS McCARTHY / & CO. / LOUISVILLE . KY.". Base with bold-faced stenciled "2" flanked by stenciled floral motifs. A fine example of Kentucky advertising stoneware, which features the desirable Western PA eagle motif and includes particularly crisp stenciling. Excellent, essentially as-made condition.
