Outstanding Five-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Profuse Freehand and Stenciled Star Decorations, Stenciled "Hamilton & Jones / Greensboro / Greene Co. Pa.," circa 1870, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with elaborate freehand stripes, spots, and vining above the large stenciled signature of Hamilton & Jones, underscored by wavy cobalt stripes. Base with stenciled "5" flanked by two large stenciled stars and underscored with stripes. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Excellent top-to-bottom decoration, with an appealing combination of crisp stenciling and freehand brushwork. A curved crack from rim on reverse, which measures 6" vertically from rim. A chip to each end of left handle. A small chip to end of right handle.
