Rare Twenty-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Matamoras, Ohio Advertising, Stenciled "STAR POTTERY", Hamilton & Jones, Greensboro, PA, circa 1875, large-sized cylindrical jar with squared rim, tooled shoulder, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large stenciled design of a spread-winged Federal eagle clutching a banner, inscribed "STAR POTTERY". Stenciled below with the advertising "CHARLES MILLER / MATAMORAS OHIO". Freehand vining and stripe decoration to shoulder. Graduated stripes forming a diamond pattern flanking the stenciled advertising. Base with freehand number 20 flanked by graduated stripes, with additional horizontal stripes below. A particularly fine example of Western PA stoneware made for the Ohio market. A tight, stained 12 1/4" fork-shaped line on reverse, extending upward from base area. An additional 5" line on reverse. A 7 3/4" Y-shaped line on right side of jar. A small chip to each end of the right handle. H 23 3/4".
