One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to John P. Schermerhorn, Henrico County, VA, circa 1817-1837, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed design of a circular flower blossom emanating from a leafy stem. Brushed vine decoration at shoulder on reverse. Edges of handles brushed with a cobalt stripe. Excellent size and classic Schermerhorn decoration. A small base chip, possibly in-the-firing. A small chip to one handle. Light wear to opposite handle. Shallow rim chips. Light wear around midsection.
