Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Cream Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "LEWISTOWN POTTERY", circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a leafy stem bearing three larger tulip blossoms, accented with brushed dashes on the interiors of the blossoms and stylized stamens. Impressive decoration and difficult-to-find Central PA maker's mark. A chip and a minor nick to right handle. Two chips on interior of rim. A faint 5" Y-shaped hairline to shoulder on reverse. A faint 4" hairline on underside, connecting to a faint 4" vertical line on side of jar.
