Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Slip-Trailed Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA", circa 1865, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a plant bearing oval fruit or flower blossoms. Brushed cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Strong color and desirable slip-trailed decorative treatment, unusual for this maker. A 7/8" base chip. Some shallow chipping along molding at base of collar. Roughness to each end of the left handle. A small iron ping at shoulder on reverse. A short hairline in rim on front. Some typical wear to inner rim where a lid would rest.
