Fine Six-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Elaborate Cobalt Bird-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "WEST TROY, / N.Y. / POTTERY", circa 1875, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird with turned head, long tail, and cobalt-highlighted body, perched on a tree stump. Striped details to trunk. Heavily-slip-trailed ground below includes shrubs and stylized flowers. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Includes Albany-slip-glazed lid. Some fry to cobalt. Large sealed spider crack to reverse. A small in-the-firing ping to shoulder on right side of front. A 1 1/2" salt drip to left side of churn. Wear to interior of rim and inner rim for lid. One chip to lid.
